It would be a project whose costs and efforts would make building the
Great Wall Of China look minor as far as its scope went.
|
According to the largest and most definitive study, the SERT
R and D program, the projected cost and timeline starting
in '02 would be as follows.
From 2002 to 2006 the funding request for SSP was respectively
$88million
$124million
$211million
$282million
$312million
....which should lead to the next step, MSC1 (model system category 1)
TABLE 2-1 NASA’s SERT Program—Model System Category Definitions
MSC 1 2006–2007 ~100 kW
Free flyer
LEO-to-Earth power beaming research platform
Solar power plug in space
Cryogenic propellant depot
“Mega-commsat” demonstrator
MSC 1.5 2011–2012 ~1 MW
GEO-to-Earth solar power satellite (SPS) demonstrator
Lunar exploration SPS platform

..............................
So I say let's pick up this schedule where they left off.
Except with the added urgency the new concensus on
global warming and oil depletion provide.
SSP on Steroids......goddammit!!!
And think of this for a minute. To have such a dramatic
policy come true requires that we convince only two people.
The respective leaders of each party for the next Presidential
election. Just those two people. Or just two people
they will listen to and so on.
And this is an easy sell. How many people might benefit?
Well, a politician would have something to give to just
about everyone. Politically, in the /current/ post Katrina
environment, it should be a politicians wet-dream.
So many seem to think that a few people couldn't possibly
'make a difference'.
But the internet means that's not true anymore.
Just the opposite is true. The good idea can take
on a life of its own, and from the humblest of
beginnings.

This concept is what led South American countries to become the economic

Actually, I'd kind of like to see that happen.
Nothing like a major-league financial crisis and epiphany to get a
