Distant planet judged possibly habitable
In findings that if confirmed could stand as a landmark in history,
astronomers report finding the most Earth-like planet outside our
Solar System to date.

This is too much of a leap to make just yet. It might be like a super
Venus... And don't red dwarf stars have a habit of flaring? |

Damn, we really need to get cracking on that FTL drive.

I'd settle for "real close ot the speed of light drive"....

If it has only a 13-hour transit time, tidal effects have probably
slowed down its rotation to one per transit, making one side face its
star and the other side always in the dark -- not conducive to the
emergence of life. |

If we're to judge by the small sample of you, probably not.

That's not the case; it's just sufficiently different from our model for
the same arguments as precession.

In my experience, inability to distinguish a humorous post, combined
with replying in insults,is usually a greater indicator of lower
intelligence. |

How would one know that it was meant to be humorous? There are
certainly plenty of people in this group that hate humanity, and don't
mind saying so. Particularly with weird screen names, like "eyeball." |

This has been talked about a lot at rec.arts.sf.science.
The conventional wisdom held a tide-locked planet near a red dwarf would
be too hot on one side and too cold on the other.
But (IIRC) Brian Davis told of computer models that showed atmospheric
convection would distribute heat through out the planet's surface.
So it's not a given that tide-locked planets are to be excluded from the
list of possible life harboring planets.
