It's Texas. The guy might have just been told it was his turn to buy

I hadn't thought about the beer angle, but yes, Texas.

Good grief - people are dead here. Have some respect!

Most 60 year old engineers are in coasting mode where if they keep their
jobs between now and retirement, that is all that matters. People that old
don't usually expect promotions. I'm surprised that a bad performance
review would upset him that much, unless it implied that he would be laid
off. I wonder if he lost his life savings in a divorce or something and now
he needs his job.

The shooter was one screwed up individual. It's a pity he didn't get the
help he needed before he bought two hand guns and a boat load of ammunition.
I suppose he also lied on the applications to purchase those handguns, but
there isn't any way to check that information on those things is accurate.

Circuit City recently downsized by firing its most experienced (i.e. highest
paid) salesmen and are set to replace them with poorly paid kids who don't
know anything about the products they're selling.

At the bank where someone I know works, it's routine to come up with reasons
to fire or lay off middle management employees who are nearing the date
where they become fully vested in their pensions. You simply promote some
other poor schmuck who thinks they'll be promoted out of middle management
before they become fully vested in their pension. It saves the company a
lot of money in the long run.

Welcome to 21st century business practices in the good old USA.

Perhaps, but the system should have indicated that he was in fact
screwed up despite what he indicated on his applications.

Now he'll be in the Texas penal system for well after his retirement
time. Sort of dumb from a standpoint of a job that wasn't working.

In the case of the Virginia Tech shooter, the indications of "a
threat to himself and others", via several psychological evaluations,
ends up in the database for gun purchase background checks other than
just whether he was a felon or not.

Are you saying the system was just fine WRT which Cho purchased his
weapons, despite what was known about him?

Well, that would be handy but that's not what they apparently found.
Otherwise he wouldn't have been walking around loose.

Hint: What I've seen says he was found to NOT be a threat to others.

The real question is when we'll get around to charging mental health
professionals for malpractice when they make such errors.

:Are you saying the system was just fine WRT which Cho purchased his

Apparently you don't know "what was known about him".
