U.S. space tourist Charles Simonyi enjoyed an extra day in space on
Tuesday when boggy ground meant the date and location of his return to
Earth in a capsule with two others had to be changed.

I wonder what the extra charges will be?

Suppose he said 'no' -- does he get a parachute?

Only if he has his cash on hand. Russians won't take a check for
"incidentals during the flight". :-)

Au contraire, he should ask for a refund/compensation since his return
flight is a day late. Smile

THis reminds me of a promotion offered by Scotty's and Air Florida about 25
years ago. If you bought $100 worth of building supplies at Scotty's in any
number of transactions, you got a buy one, get one free round trip ticket. I
was young and naive then.

I wasn't eligible because I worked at Scotty's. The area was primarily a
retirement community. The number of old farts who would buy stuff at random,
then get their ticket, then return stuff astounded me. One fellow thought
the store was trying to cheat people because he couldn't buy a one-way
ticket and get the return ticket free. He got mad and insulted me when I
told him that, if he thought he was being cheated, then he shouldn't
participate in the promotion.

Now, if he'd bought $20M in building supplies...

Hoo-rah! Definitely a situation where I wouldn't mind going "standby"
for a day.

About ten years ago, my wife and I just barely made it out of the
country just ahead of some of the worst nor'easters and snowstorms to
ever hit the US, to one of our then-regular trips to Jamaica. Just after
landing in Montego Bay, we're hanging out waiting for our luggage and
glancing at CNN and the Weather Channel on the airport TVs, and seeing
how many flights are being delayed, and how rotten the weather's turned.

For almost the entire two weeks we were there, conversation around
beach/pool/jacuzzi/bar centered on How Bad A Blizzard You Barely Beat
Out Of Town To Get To Negril Beach.

Two days before we were to fly home, word came through that storms in
the northern Midwest had stranded some of our flights in the continental
US and would be delayed by at least a day. We were given the choice of
going to the airport and waiting on the chance our particular flight
home got through, or a couple of free days at the resort. Needless to
say, the wife and I took the extra days lying around the beach lighting
up. (some folks with flights coming from further south in the
continental US took the chance on having to sleep at the airport. huh.)

Long story short: What?? Another day or two aboard the ISS, with maybe
an hour of blank miniDV and an empty memory card left and this view out
there that changes every second to something even more beautiful...?
Sure, I can hack that.

I don't know what Sunita Williams is thinking right now, though.

Closest I cam to avoind something "bad" like that was while in college
visiting the campus of another college for a training I was leading... and
leaving about 3 hours before the entire campus was quarentined for the
measles.
