I last saw him giving a live demo at the National Science Teachers
Conference, some few years ago. He was stammering and obviously having a
difficult time imparting his objective to the audience. He used the wrong
names of several chemicals and even did some outright dangerous things.
Despite teh decline, his audience was entirely captivated by being in the
presence of the man. I so much more enjoyed Don Herbert over Bill Nye, who,
though a qualified successor, is far too pre-packaged and slick. There was
something really outstanding about seeing science performed live by Mr.
Wizard.
Don was an inspiration for generations of fertile, young, minds. He was a
credit to education.
