... for their public space simulation engine.
NASA obviously prefers fantasy, over reality, science and physics.

Have you actually read any of the press releases? Orbiter is a
wonderful flight simulator, but NASA intends to use 2nd Life primarily
as a way of allowing vicarious exploration of the lunar (and Martian)
surfaces, ISS and Orion interiors etc. Orbiter can't handle that, nor
should it. |

What's wrong with actual ... rovers?

You're right, an ignorant American public engaged in fantasy is better
than an educated and scientifically literate public engaged in physics.

What actual rovers? The two on Mars move at a rate of tens of feet per |
day, which hardly makes for a compelling real-time experience. NASA
wants to use 2nd Life for PR purposes: rather than producing a
promotional PR film or two, they want a virtual environment which will
make people think that exploration is interesting and fun, and
hopefully they will then support the program.

You're right, an ignorant American public engaged in fantasy is better

You are moving the goalposts. You complained that NASA was using |
Second Life rather than Orbiter. Do you propose that they should use
Orbiter as their primary PR software? Even most space enthusiasts
(such as myself) find what you see when you get there (Jovian system,
Venus orbit, planetary surfaces) a lot more interesting than just
getting there. A sizable segment of the American public which thinks
that space exploration is interesting, because they've been able to
vicariously see what it is about, is probably better (at least for
NASA) than a much smaller proportion which are happily enjoying
themselves with celestial mechanics.
FWIW, I find Orbiter fairly flavorless. Even with the new graphics,
there isn't that much to see when you get there. My space simulations
of choice are "Eagle Lander 3D", which is an excellent simulation of
flying the LM, and features pretty good graphics, a good cockpit
model, and a simulation of at least the interface and functionality of
the LM's computer, and "A-OK, Wings of Mercury" which is a good
simulation of, guess what, project Mercury. It isn't quite as open-
ended as the Mercury add-ons to Orbitor, but it has a more realistic
spacecraft model (electrical system, life-support etc.) and, more
importantly, incorporates potential failure modes. |
